2025-01-08 | The new update is very buggy. I hadn't updated in a while and when I finally did, multiple features are not working. 1) Attempting to load submitted checklists causes the app to crash. 2) When starting a list from a previous date, there is no way to create a new location- only my current location appears. I haven't used the rest of the app yet, but those two features are the only things I've attempted so far and neither have worked. Please fix, I was planning on using the app for yearlisting!
2024-11-26 | The app looks like it could be useful, but it's an exercise in frustration to even open it as j just get peppered with warning and pop ups trying to explain stuff that are about of context for what a new user experiences when they are trying to figure out the app. I shut it down and unlinked it from Merlin in pure frustration. Why Merlin sent me to this app, I have no clue, as I can see zero added value at present. I'm sure it has value, but what that might be is a mystery.
2024-10-30 | Since no one answers emails- there is a major bug that causes ended checklists to restart when reopening the app in a new area. This is during the PA bird atlas so it forces the checklist outside of the block. This is really messed up for people who don't know to edit the track or who don't notice it has happened! It's been going on for ages and it's literally going to mess up data for the Atlas and ebird in general. Please fix it!
2024-09-24 | Ok app, but it has limitations that make it difficult to use. My biggest gripe is the lack of being able to save a hotspot, to say a list of favorites, and be able to quickly go to that and see recent checklists submitted. It's painful to do this simple action with the current app. I'm not looking for a single species, and I'm not near the hotspots I might want to visit, i e. more than 30 miles away.
2024-07-10 | The new interface looks terrible. They took what was an aesthetically pleasing thing to look at and as with the Merlin app update, turned it into a super bland page that essentially looks blank with a little text. please get a new design team that understands how to make things look better, not worse. oversimplification is destroying everything. The functionality still seems to work, but the new look ain't it.
2024-04-24 | It's a nice idea, but it's too complicated for a simple life list. I just want something that let's me search a database by bird and fill in the rest manually. I don't need timers and checklists. Also, it should just be part of the Merlin app, especially since the bird packs have to be downloaded twice (and eBird doesn't have an option for all of North America, just each state).
2024-02-25 | This was working perfectly from October 2023 until today February 2024. I got a new phone but my app data was backed up. However, when I logged in, it no longer lets me save birds or add a new location. It only allows me to choose from "nearby" locations that are over 1 mile, or an old one. I absolutely loved this app, I don't know what I'll use to bird watch now :(
2024-01-28 | After taking the "eBird Essentials" course, I found the app easy to use in the field. It is extremely helpful when there are more than a few birds, or when you will be moving around the site for more than a few minutes, because it offers quick data entry and automatic tracking of time and distance. Initially I encountered an error about downloading a bird list when trying to choose a location but this later disappeared. Recommend that developer removes the bird list download at this point.
2023-10-26 | I find it really annoying that there is a mandatory non-skippable, no disable, checking for updated bird lists in an area. In every new area you visit, even 5 miles apart. If i am in an area of poor signal this can take 10 minutes or more to complete. Not worth it. I don't care about an updated bird list. I want to catalog what I see, quickly & move on to using my phone for other things while enjoying the outdoors. 98% of the time that is birds have seen before and I'm updating counts.
2023-08-21 | eBird - both the website and the app - are a little tricky to learn at first. The interface for both isn't really intuitive, and it's easy to give up in frustration. Thankfully, Cornell has A+ tutorial videos on the website, and once you understand that the app is for data input while the website is for data analysis, you're good to go. Stunning that this is free, eBird is a scientific powerhouse to see how your own personal life lists plug into a bigger picture. |
