2025-02-01 | Edited review since they (yay thanks!) resolved the volume issue. I've enjoyed the content for a few years but I'm astonished and disappointed that there are STILL visual accessability issues, at least on Android. If your phone has large fonts enabled, good luck seeing the exercise prompt and the keyboard at the same time, and scrolling up/down to input anything has become increasingly cumbersome over the years. Comparable apps are better at accommodating non-20/20 vision users.
2025-01-31 | Fat swing and a huge miss. I can tolerate buggy free apps, but when you charge good money for a product, and you don't build in ways for users to over ride the flaws in the program, then the price is not justified. This app fails on single words, like El, and Seis - and it's not me because I am married to a fluent Spanish Speaker. She says the app can't hear correctly...and that is it's biggest problem. It will downgrade you based on its faulty errors. Very bad app.
2025-01-29 | Babbel is like the more formal version of Duolingo. The courses are easy to do yet informative, although I wish they offered more options like Hangul. But my favorite feature is that you can do a one-time purchase valid for 99 years. That's right, a LIFETIME LICENSE- IN 2025! I'm sure others are also sick of subscriptions and just want to buy a product once, so it's very refreshing to hear companies say "look, just give us the cash now, you won't have to worry about payments again."
2025-01-28 | I lowered the rating. I REALLY dont care for this software. I don't feel like I'm learning anything. There's not enough repetition for words to stick. It dumps a bunch of grammar rules all at once. Often, you have the sentence with no translation. When you do a review, it covers a word you've seen maybe twice over a week ago. I was hoping that this might give some more formal training compared to duolingo, but it hasn't. Extremely disappointed and wishing I could get my money back.
2025-01-27 | Their explanations set them apart from competitors. No other app explains cultural differences, grammar, and "Dutch things". For example: Babbel uses actual sounds that match the NS/train station. And their visual aids match what they're referring to (unlike competitors who use random, irrelevant pictures). The pricing and quality is simply superior.
2025-01-24 | Very inconsistent in recording doing an action. It will very often show me I have done the action to keep my streak, but then use a streak freeze the next day anyway. Or it won't update the streak at all, but will not use a freeze and show the day as continuing the streak anyway. If you're going to gamify learning a language, you should get the basic functionality like recording lessons working. That's the whole idea of the streak, but it just isn't consistently working, which is frustrating
2025-01-21 | I've had Babbel for YEARS, regret wasting the money, which often got syphined out of my account bc I forgot to cancel the sub. It's ineffective, but I didn't realize just how ineffective until I started using Duolingo. I use the free version & it's WAY more engaging and fun. Babbel is frustrating in a lot of ways, 2 of which are when you pronounce a word perfectly & it tells you you're wrong time after time, & when it doesn't register you learned that day & messes up your streak.
2025-01-21 | Pretty good app, but one thing that I don't care for are the characters (actors) that Babbel uses for audio dialogues. Most of them are over-the-top and way too cheerful to the point of being annoying. I've been to France many times and people don't generally speak this way. There should be all ranges of dialogue and not just overly happy, annoying people all the time.
2025-01-18 | A major part of the lessons is typing in words letter by letter, not using your keyboard, but using letter buttons within the app. These buttons are so broken it makes you dread doing a lesson. They are unresponsive, tiny, terrible font. You have to press them very slowly and precisely or they miss your input and you have to then slowly delete them and reenter. It sounds minor, but it is so maddening. Ruins the entire app.
2025-01-16 | The actual content is very good however they definitely need to allow for actual repetition and some practice runs rather than just a once over kind of thing. The app is also extremely buggy every single time I go to start the app I have to close it and go back into it because it just doesn't load correctly and this has been after updates and uninstalling and reinstalling with the newest phones. No matter what I do to troubleshooter both the voice recognition and starting are not good. |
