User reviews
Users appreciate the Concise Oxford English Dictionary app for its accurate, clear definitions and helpful audio pronunciations, making it useful for language learners. However, many find the user interface unintuitive, and the presence of persistent ads—even after payment—diminishes the experience. Additionally, offline access is limited and costly, and some users report missing words in the dictionary and dissatisfaction with the Word of the Day feature. Overall, it is valued for educational use but hindered by technical and monetization issues.
Pros
- Provides accurate and clear definitions suitable for learners and competitive exams.
- Includes audio pronunciations helping with correct word usage and British pronunciation.
- Useful for expanding vocabulary and learning new words, especially for non-native English speakers.
- Considered reputable due to being an Oxford dictionary.
- Simple to use and helpful in understanding word etymology.
Cons
- The app contains many ads, even for paid users, including ads for other apps from the developer.
- Offline usage requires payment with a unclear or complicated access system, and the app may close if unpaid after trial.
- The user interface is not intuitive and described as messy, leading to usability frustration.
- Contains missing words and lacks certain vocabulary compared to other dictionaries, affecting its comprehensiveness.
- Word of the Day (WotD) feature is poor and not educational, sometimes showing irrelevant or strange words.
Recent reviews
I'm conflicted. OED has, without question, the absolute worst WotD algorithm out there. It once chose "mass murder." Today's is "Mattins. Variant spelling of matins" (umm.. thanks?). It's so bad that I've actually grown to love it for the amusement it provides! Just don't expect an education.
